Eloping at Moraine Lake in Banff National Park

Ideas + Inspo, Planning tips

Your Guide to Saying “I Do” at One of Banff’s Most Iconic Lakes

If you’re dreaming of turquoise waters, towering peaks, and a location that feels straight out of a fairytale—eloping at Moraine Lake might be exactly what your heart is searching for. Moraine Lake is one of the most photographed places in the world, and for good reason. With its jaw-dropping scenery and romantic atmosphere, it’s the perfect backdrop for an intimate “just us” wedding day.

But planning an elopement here comes with some unique logistics. Let’s break it all down so you can step into this day stress-free and full of excitement.

How to Get to Moraine Lake

Moraine Lake is located in Banff National Park, just outside the town of Lake Louise. Because of its popularity, private vehicles are no longer permitted during peak season. Instead, Parks Canada and private shuttle operators provide access.

  • Parks Canada Shuttles: These run from the Lake Louise Ski Resort and the Park & Ride near Lake Louise. Reservations are required and can sell out quickly, so booking early is essential. Learn more HERE
  • Roam Public Transit: Offers service from Banff to Lake Louise, where you can connect to the shuttle. Learn more HERE
  • Private Shuttles & Tours: Several local companies provide direct transportation, which can be a great option if you want more flexibility with timing.

When planning your elopement, factor in shuttle bookings as part of your timeline—this ensures you arrive relaxed and ready to soak in the magic.

Where to Elope at Moraine Lake

You’ve got options depending on the vibe you’re envisioning:

  • The Rockpile: The famous viewpoint overlooking the Valley of the Ten Peaks. It’s iconic, dramatic, and perfect for couples who want those sweeping views in their photos.
  • Lakeshore Trail: A quieter spot with dreamy forest vibes and crystal-clear reflections of the mountains.
  • By Canoe: Imagine exchanging vows right on the water, with nothing but the sound of your paddles and the mountains surrounding you.

Each location has its own feel—some are more private, others more dramatic. I always help couples pick the perfect spot that matches their vision.

Booking a Canoe Ride

Canoeing on Moraine Lake is a bucket-list experience, and it can add a playful, adventurous twist to your elopement day. Canoe rentals are available lakeside from the Moraine Lake Lodge. They operate daily during the open season, and rentals are first-come, first-served. If you want those golden-hour canoe photos, plan to line up a little earlier to secure your boat. Best Time of Day to Elope at Moraine Lake

Because Moraine Lake is so popular, sunrise is your best friend. Early mornings mean fewer crowds, soft light, and a serene atmosphere that feels like the whole valley is just yours. Evenings can also be beautiful (and a little quieter than midday), but keep in mind that the sun dips behind the peaks earlier than the official sunset time.

Season & Accessibility

One of the most important things to know: Moraine Lake is only open from mid-June until Canadian Thanksgiving weekend (early October). Outside of those months, the access road is closed due to avalanche risk. This makes the elopement window short, but that exclusivity makes it all the more magical.
