Edmonton Surprise Fall Proposal
The story of how my best friend got the best surprise of her life during an unforgettable Edmonton Surprise Fall Proposal.
There are certain moments where being a photographer feels less like a job and more like witnessing the universe line everything up perfectly. This was one of those moments—an evening wrapped in golden leaves, cool Edmonton air, and a plan so detailed that my best friend had absolutely no idea she was about to get engaged.
This wasn’t just any proposal. It was an Edmonton surprise fall proposal filled with intention, emotion, and the kind of joy that makes your heart feel too big for your chest.
And yes… it involved me hiding in tall grass.
The Planning: Location Scouting & A Foolproof Story
When her now-fiancé reached out wanting to craft something unforgettable, I was instantly in. We walked the river valley together, searching for a spot that felt soft, tucked away, and glowing with autumn colours. We found a quiet bend in the trail surrounded by tall grass and warm, golden foliage—the kind of place where time feels slower.
But finding the location was the easy part.
The real challenge? Getting her there without raising suspicion.
Thankfully, we had the perfect excuse—family photos with his family.
It was something they did regularly, so it didn’t feel unusual at all. We simply said, “Let’s do some updated fall family photos this weekend!” and she didn’t question it for a second. She got dressed up, did her hair, and showed up ready for what she thought would be wholesome, normal family portraits.
Little did she know… neither his family nor the photos existed.
It was all part of the plan.
Operation: Hide in the Tall Grass
I arrived early, camera in hand, heart pounding. I tucked myself into the tall grass near the chosen spot, crouching low enough that I felt like an undercover wildlife photographer.
From my hiding spot, I could hear them before I saw them—footsteps crunching through leaves, soft laughter, and the jingle of their dog’s collar. Their pup happily trotted ahead, completely unaware he was about to witness a life-changing moment.
As they walked down the path toward me, I steadied my camera and tried not to move a single blade of grass.
She still had no idea until I popped up out of the grass

The Moment Her Entire World Shifted
They reached the clearing, surrounded by warm fall light. He turned to her, took a breath, and held her hands.
That was my cue.
He dropped to one knee.
Her jaw dropped. Her hands flew over her mouth. And then she started jumping up and down—pure, uncontrollable, radiant joy bursting out of her. Their dog circled them in excitement, tail wagging like never before, as if he’d been waiting for this moment too.
She said yes immediately, repeatedly, with laughter and tears mixing into the happiest expression I’ve ever seen her wear. With endless jumping up and down with pure excitement!
I snapped photo after photo, tears in my own eyes, praying my camera didn’t fog up from how emotional I was.
This wasn’t just a proposal.
This was a memory that would live with her forever—and I got to document it.

Engagement Photos Right After the Proposal
Once the initial hugs, happy tears, and dog zoomies settled, I stepped out from my hiding spot and told her I’d been there the whole time. She screamed. Then laughed. Then cried again.
And because she was already glowing with adrenaline and joy, we rolled right into a mini engagement session.
The fall colours were unreal—warm, golden light filtering through the trees, leaves floating around them like confetti, and two people so wildly in love that every image felt like it belonged on a book cover.
There’s something magical about photographing a couple immediately after they get engaged. The excitement is electric. The smiles are effortless. The connection is unfiltered.
Those photos? Easily some of my favourite images I’ve ever taken.

Plot Twist: The Guests Didn’t Even Know It Was a Party
But the surprises weren’t over yet…
We arranged a casual gathering afterward—just a regular night with friends and family. At least… that’s what everyone else thought.
When the newly engaged couple walked in, the entire room froze. Then came the screams, the hugs, the happy tears, the “OH MY GOD WHAT?!”, and the “WAIT… YOU GOT ENGAGED TODAY?!”
Even the guests were surprised.
Nobody saw it coming.
There was champagne, music, tight hugs, clinking glasses, and a very proud dog receiving all the praise for being part of the plan (as he should).
It was chaotic in the most beautiful way.

Planning Your Own Edmonton Surprise Fall Proposal?
Here’s how to create a moment as meaningful and magical as theirs:
1. Choose a location with heart
Pick somewhere meaningful, scenic, or symbolic. Edmonton’s river valley is perfect in the fall.
2. Use a believable cover story
Family photos, a fall walk, brunch after, “I want new pictures for the living room”—keep it natural.
3. Keep the circle small
The fewer people who know, the smoother it goes.
4. Have a photographer ready and hidden
Trust me: candid reactions are priceless.
And yes—I am fully prepared to hide in bushes again.
5. Plan a celebration afterward
Anything from dinner to a full surprise party keeps the magic going.
6. Include your dog (or fur baby)
It’s adorable. single. time.
Why This Proposal Meant So Much to Me
Photographing proposals is always special… but photographing my best friend’s proposal? Hiding in tall grass, holding back tears, clicking the shutter as she jumped with joy? That’s a moment I’ll never forget.
It reminded me why I love what I do:
Love deserves to be documented beautifully.
The quiet spaces in the world make the best places to say “yes.”
And the best stories begin with a surprise.
