Your Guide to Eloping in Vancouver Island

Location Guides

What Is an Elopement?

Elopements used to be about secretly running away and tying the knot in private—but today, they’ve evolved into something so much more intentional and meaningful.

Now, eloping is about choosing a celebration that reflects you two—your connection, your values, and your love story. Whether it’s just the two of you or a handful of your favorite people, an elopement is a deeply personal way to say your vows in a way that feels authentic and completely free from outside expectations.

Why Elope on Vancouver Island?

If you’re dreaming of an elopement that’s wild, romantic, and full of variety—Vancouver Island is it. From lush old-growth forests to rugged coastlines, sandy beaches to misty mountains, this corner of British Columbia is packed with dreamy backdrops and soulful energy.

Everything is surprisingly close, making it easy to explore multiple landscapes in a single day. Whether you’re hiking to a waterfall, exchanging vows on a cliffside, or sharing a picnic by the ocean—this island makes your elopement feel like a full-on adventure.

How to Legally Elope on Vancouver Island

Planning a legal elopement in British Columbia is pretty straightforward. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Marriage Licence
You’ll need to grab a BC marriage licence, which costs $100. It’s best to get it 1–2 months before your elopement, just in case. You can apply here.
  • An Officiant
You’ll need a licensed officiant to make it all official! You can search for one who aligns with your vibe and is local to your chosen spot here.
  • Two Witnesses
All you need are two witnesses who are over the age of 19. Don’t stress if you’re eloping just the two of you—I’ve stepped in as a witness for couples before, and I’m happy to help make it happen.

Best Places to Elope on Vancouver Island

Vancouver Island is an elopement dreamland—wild coastlines, ancient forests, misty mountains, and endless places to explore. Whether you’re looking for an adventurous hike, a secluded beach, or a forested trail that feels straight out of a fairytale, this island has it all.

Here are a few of my favorite elopement locations:

Tofino
Known for its rugged beauty, Tofino is perfect for couples craving an oceanside adventure. Think windswept beaches like Cox Bay and Chesterman, ancient rainforests, surf culture, and a moody coastal vibe that makes every photo feel cinematic.

East Sooke Park
Tucked away just outside of Victoria, this spot offers peaceful trails, rocky shorelines, mountain views, and picnic-worthy meadows. It’s a gem for couples who want a mix of ocean and forest without venturing too far.

Mystic Beach
Mystic Beach is pure magic. The 45-minute hike takes you through old-growth forest, past a suspension bridge, and ends at a tucked-away beach with cliffs, tide pools, and even a hidden waterfall. It’s a coastal wonderland perfect for a more adventurous elopement.

Mount Douglas (PKOLS)
For epic views without a full-day hike, Mount Doug is a go-to. Multiple trails lead to the summit, and while AllTrails labels it “hard,” many locals consider it a moderate climb. Sunrise or sunset here? Absolutely breathtaking.

Neck Point Park (Nanaimo)
A stunning, oceanfront park filled with rocky cliffs, scenic trails, and hidden beaches. It’s low-effort with high-reward and ideal for couples wanting something coastal but easily accessible.

Saxe Point Park
This quiet, coastal park near Victoria offers sweeping ocean views, sunset glow, and a peaceful vibe. It’s a great option for those wanting a relaxed day with nature, just minutes from town.

These are just a handful of the beautiful, soulful spaces waiting for you on Vancouver Island—each one full of potential for something uniquely you.

When’s the Best Time to Elope on Vancouver Island?

The beauty of Vancouver Island? It’s stunning year-round. That said, here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Best overall months: January to mid-September
  • Rainiest season: November + December (but honestly, the moody vibes can be magical)
  • Least busy months: January–May and September—perfect if you’re looking to avoid peak tourist crowds.

Whether you’re dreaming of wildflowers, lush greenery, or dramatic skies, we can plan around the season to make it work beautifully.

Activities to Include in Your Vancouver Island Elopement

Your elopement can be so much more than a ceremony—it can be an experience. Think beyond the vows and into what makes your hearts feel most alive.

Here are some epic ideas for your day:

  • Surf the waves in Tofino
  • Paddleboard on a glassy lake
  • Go off-roading through coastal trails
  • Take a floatplane or helicopter ride for jaw-dropping views
  • Hike through ancient forests
  • Canoe across a still alpine lake
  • Charter a boat and explore the coastline
  • Share a picnic on the beach at sunset
  • Go whale watching
  • Sip wine at a local vineyard

What does your dream day look like? Whatever you envision, we can bring it to life.
