Planning the Proposal

  • Research and Book Early: Helicopter tours in Canmore are popular, so book well in advance. Companies like Alpine Helicopters and Rockies Heli Canada offer various packages tailored for proposals.

  • Select a Scenic Location: Consult with the helicopter company about the most picturesque and private spots. Popular destinations include Mt. Assiniboine, Marvel Pass, and Glacier Lake. The photographs below are through the Marvel Pass. We were able to fly right up to Mt. Assiniboine!

This couple got engaged right before the helicopter tour as we weren’t able to land the helicopter that day (too much snow). It’s good to have a backup plan like this incase it is needed!

Timing is Everything

  • Best Time of Year: Late spring to early fall (June to September) is ideal. The weather is generally more stable, and the landscapes are lush and vibrant. Winter proposals offer a magical snow-covered backdrop, but they come with more unpredictable weather. With the unpredicitable weather comes with uncertainty if you can land the helicopter. For the best chance to land the helicopter in Canmore, I recommend booking late June - September.

  • Time of Day: Golden hour (the hour after sunrise and before sunset) provides the best lighting for photography. The soft, warm light enhances the romantic atmosphere and highlights the natural beauty of the Rockies. With that, sometimes the heli tours don’t operate past a certain time so being flexible is key!

What to Expect

  • Pre-Flight Preparation: Arrive early for a safety briefing and to meet the pilot. This is also a great time to discuss any specific requests or special touches you’ve planned.

  • The Flight: The helicopter ride usually lasts 20-30 minutes, depending on the tour booked, offering breathtaking aerial views. Make sure to have your camera ready for some spectacular in-flight shots.

  • The Proposal: Once you land at the chosen location, the helicopter will give you privacy for the big moment. Plan your proposal speech in advance to make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime setting. If you’re unable to land the helicopter that day, you can propose before the tour (like the couple below) or after the helicopter tour!

Things to Consider

  • Weather Conditions: Weather can change rapidly in the mountains. Have a backup plan in case of inclement weather.

  • Attire: Dress appropriately for the season. Even in summer, it can be chilly at higher altitudes. Avoid overly bright colors that can distract in photos.

  • Ring Security: Ensure the engagement ring is securely packed during the flight. A secure ring box or a zippered pocket is recommended.

Hiring the Right Professionals

  • Helicopter Service: Choose a reputable helicopter company with excellent safety records and positive reviews. The pilots' experience in the local terrain is crucial for a smooth and safe journey. I have worked with Alpine Helicopter Tours multiple times and have had a wonderful experience!

  • Photographer: Hire a professional photographer experienced in aerial and mountain photography. They should be comfortable shooting in dynamic conditions and have a good understanding of lighting and composition in outdoor settings. • Videographer (Optional): For a more comprehensive capture of the moment, consider hiring a videographer. Drone footage isn’t typically available on helicopter tours as it can be in the way. Please make sure to check prior to using a drone!

A Canmore helicopter proposal is a magical blend of adventure and romance, perfect for couples looking for an unforgettable engagement. As a photographer, capturing this moment requires careful planning, the right equipment, and an eye for detail. By considering the factors mentioned above, you can ensure the proposal goes off without a hitch and provide the couple with stunning photographs to cherish for a lifetime.
