What is needed to legally get married during your helicopter tour in Banff?

To get legally married in Banff, you’ll need:

  • A valid marriage license from the province of Alberta. You can obtain this from any registry office in Alberta, and it’s valid for three months. You can find more details about this - HERE

  • Two witnesses to sign your marriage license. If you’re planning a very intimate elopement without guests, your photographer and pilot can often serve as witnesses. Being a photographer myself, I am more than happy to be one of your witnesses!

  • An authorized marriage officiant. Ensure your officiant is licensed to perform weddings in Alberta and is comfortable with remote locations. There are some helicopter tours in Banff that have an officiant already but in the case they don’t, you can search for some - HERE

When should you hire and book your helicopter elopement?

It’s best to book your helicopter tour at least 6-12 months in advance, especially if you’re planning to elope during peak seasons like summer or fall. This ensures availability and gives you ample time to plan other details of your elopement. That being said, if the helicopters have openings, you can book a last minute heli elopement in Banff!

What to wear for your helicopter elopement?

Dress in layers to stay comfortable:

  • Wedding Attire: Choose outfits that are easy to move in and can withstand the elements. If you plan to do any hiking for your Helicopter Elopement then I would avoid wearing anything too tight.

  • Outerwear: Bring warm jackets, hats, and gloves, as it can be cold at high altitudes. Depending on the time of the year you decide to do your helicopter elopement, you may need to bring a snow suit

  • Footwear: Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes suitable for hiking and uneven terrain. I would avoid heels at all costs if you plan to go off the helicopter for any reason.

What are some backup plans if the helicopter tour gets cancelled?

Weather in the mountains can be unpredictable. Have a backup plan in case of cancellations:

  • Alternative Dates: Arrange a flexible schedule with your vendors. This can be a challenge but having people keep the day after open would be ideal in the case the original date doesn’t work

  • Ground Locations: Choose a beautiful, accessible ground location as a backup.

  • Refunds and Rescheduling: Check the cancellation and refund policies of your helicopter tour company then go on another adventure instead, such as; gondola, canoeing etc
