12 Adventurous & Intimate Places to Elope in Alberta
(plus a few bonus gems to inspire your wildest dreams)
Updated June 2025
When you close your eyes and picture your dream elopement, what do you see?
If it’s a private, meaningful experience—somewhere beautiful and away from the chaos—then you’re not alone. That’s what most of my couples are craving: something that feels true to them. No stress. No big production. Just love, nature, and intentional moments.
And Alberta? It’s a goldmine for that kind of magic.
As an elopement photographer who’s spent years location scouting across the province, I’ve pulled together some of the best places to elope in Alberta. Some are iconic (but totally doable with the right timing), others are tucked away in peaceful corners where you can truly be alone together.
Let’s dive in.
Things to Consider Before Picking Your Spot
- Do you want a hike-in experience or an easy-access location?
- Will it be just the two of you, or will loved ones join?
- Are you dreaming of mountains, forests, lakes, badlands—or something totally different?
- Which season feels most like “you”?
Bonus tip: Choosing a photographer who knows the area means getting access to hidden spots that aren’t all over Instagram. (I love sharing secret gems with my couples that make their day feel extra special.)
1. Athabasca Day Use Area – Jasper National Park
Tucked just outside of Jasper National Park, this peaceful riverside location is one of my personal favorites. You’ll find it just off the Icefields Parkway near the Jasper airstrip—meaning it’s easy to access with no hiking required, making it ideal for guests of all mobility levels. It sits right beside the turquoise Athabasca River, with incredible views of the surrounding peaks, especially in the fall when the golden larches are glowing.
Despite being so close to town (just a 5-minute drive), this location is shockingly quiet. It’s surrounded by trees, creating a sense of privacy that’s rare in national parks. After your ceremony, you can head into Jasper for a cozy dinner to celebrate.

2. Pyramid Lake – Jasper National Park
Pyramid Lake is a popular destination just 5 minutes from the town of Jasper—but if you plan your timing right (hello, sunrise ceremony!), it becomes a peaceful haven. The lake reflects the dramatic Pyramid Mountain perfectly, and the soft morning glow is absolutely breathtaking.
You can say your vows at the shoreline or on the small island accessed by a cute wooden footbridge. Afterward, rent a canoe or paddleboat for a romantic paddle around the lake. There’s a lodge right across the road if you want to stay on-site, or cozy cabins nearby for a more secluded stay.

3. Secret Trail near Jasper Lake – Jasper National Park
This spot is a true hidden gem. About 15 minutes from Jasper near Jasper Lake, this location offers two elopement options: a private shoreline for an intimate lakeside ceremony, or a short 15–20 minute hike up to a stunning mountain top view. The trail isn’t marked on most maps, which means almost zero foot traffic—you’ll likely have it all to yourselves.
It’s best suited for adventurous couples or elopements with just a few guests. The views are absolutely unreal, especially at golden hour. I always recommend packing a picnic and hanging out at the top for a post-vow snack—you’ll want to stay a while.

4. Edith Lake – Jasper National Park
Edith Lake is peaceful, scenic, and very easy to access—just a 10-minute drive from Jasper. There’s plenty of parking and flat shoreline areas that make it perfect for couples (or guests) who want to skip the hiking.
While it’s popular with locals, the crowds here are nothing compared to other Jasper hot spots. Sunrise or sunset offers the best light and the most privacy. Want to add a little adventure to your day? Bring a canoe or paddleboard and float around after you say “I do.”

5. The Little Church – Drumheller
This tiny white church in the middle of Alberta’s badlands is full of charm and character. Built to seat just six people, it’s a super intimate setting surrounded by desert-like hills, sandstone cliffs, and dusty pathways that make for seriously unique portraits.
Whether you get married inside the church or wander up the nearby paths for an elopement among the hoodoos, this spot is so different from the mountain scene and offers a completely different Alberta experience. Just be sure to wear proper shoes—the terrain can be slippery in spots.

6. Quarry Lake – Canmore
Located just outside the town of Canmore, Quarry Lake is one of the most beautiful (and accessible) spots to elope in the Bow Valley. The lake is a stunning blue and surrounded by towering peaks, and there’s a large flat grassy area that’s perfect for a small ceremony.
It’s pet-friendly (yay for bringing your dog!) and only a few minutes from Canmore’s charming restaurants and Airbnbs. I recommend weekdays or shoulder season (late spring or early fall) to avoid crowds.

7. Spray Lakes – Kananaskis Country
Spray Lakes is tucked deep into Kananaskis Country, offering absolute seclusion and breathtaking views. This turquoise reservoir is framed by jagged peaks, and it’s often quiet—even in summer. It’s the perfect spot to unplug and just be together.
There are campsites nearby if you want to turn your elopement into a full weekend experience. Just note: because this is a reservoir, it’s not recommended for swimming or paddling. But the views? 100% worth it.

8. Cascade Gardens – Banff
Right in the heart of Banff, Cascade Gardens is a charming, floral-filled setting perfect for couples looking for something romantic and easy. It’s one of the few places in Banff that offers manicured paths, quaint gazebos, and sweeping views—all without the need for hiking.
Since it’s centrally located, it does get a good amount of visitors, but there’s usually plenty of space to find a quiet spot. You can pair your ceremony here with dinner in town, or explore other scenic areas nearby like Bow Falls or Vermilion Lakes.

9. Kananaskis Hidden Field
I stumbled on this spot while exploring and instantly knew it was something special. It’s located near a scenic pull out and offers sweeping views of mountain peaks and wild open fields—the best of both worlds.
You can do a short walk down to a large grassy area that’s perfect for a ceremony with guests, or stay up top for epic lookout photos. Keep your eyes peeled for mountain goats and wildlife, especially around dusk.

10. Cabin Elopement – Nordegg
If you’re after cozy vibes and mountain seclusion, Nordegg is the place to go. Booking a cabin here means you can have your elopement right on the property or explore nearby lakes and trails for portraits.
It’s a great option for winter or fall elopements when you want to stay warm but still immerse yourself in nature. Plus, there are several lakes within 30 minutes for a variety of backdrops.

11. Windy Point – Abraham Lake (Nordegg)
This spot sits right beside Abraham Lake, famous for its vibrant blue water and magical ice bubbles in winter. You can drive straight to the point, and the views are some of the most dramatic in Alberta.
Despite the name, not every day is windy but it sure does add a fun, wild energy to your photos when it is! Great for couples who want a quick, low-effort location with maximum wow factor.

12. Elk Island Cabins – Near Fort Saskatchewan
A quiet, cozy option east of Edmonton, Elk Island Cabins offer rustic charm and easy access to nature. You can stay in a cabin, yurt, or geodome and have your ceremony on-site—or head into Elk Island National Park for a lakefront backdrop.
This location is perfect for couples who want a laid-back, private vibe with the option to explore. Canoes, wildlife sightings, and stargazing? Yes, please.

13. Your Backyard
If you want to keep things truly personal and low-key, your own backyard can be the perfect place. Add florals, a few lights, or a custom arch—and you’ve got something intimate and meaningful.

14. Emerald Lake – Yoho National Park
Just across the BC border, Emerald Lake is jaw-droppingly beautiful. With that signature green water, a wooden lodge, and canoe rentals—it’s ideal for a lakeside elopement with lodge accommodations nearby.

15. Banff Town + Scenic Lookouts
Beyond Cascade Gardens, Banff has endless scenic locations for adventurous couples. Bow Falls, Vermilion Lakes, Tunnel Mountain… with the right timing (sunrise or sunset is key!), even these popular spots can feel private and romantic.

16. Waterton Lakes National Park
Waterton is often overlooked—and that’s exactly why it’s perfect. Located near the US border, this national park offers unique landscapes: rolling hills, dramatic cliffs, wildflowers, and glacier-fed lakes. It’s like Banff’s underrated little sister.
17. Canmore Hidden Gem – Secret Forest Viewpoint
Canmore may be known for its bustling town energy and those iconic big-mountain views, yet just a short drive from the center lies one of my favorite secret spots. Tucked away in a quiet forest clearing, it offers a peekaboo mountain backdrop that feels like your own private world—almost as if the mountains are sharing a little secret with you.
Not only is this hidden gem perfect for couples searching for privacy, but it also doesn’t require a long hike to reach it. After just a short walk through the trees, you’ll arrive at a cozy, secluded space that’s ideal for your ceremony, a slow and emotional first dance, or even a dreamy champagne picnic surrounded by nature.
Even better, the location is incredibly accessible and only a few minutes from town. This means you can pop into Canmore for dinner afterward, stay at a nearby cabin, or head out for portraits in one of the surrounding valleys for even more breathtaking scenery.
I only share the exact location with my booked couples, but trust me—it’s a total fairytale waiting for you.
